GCF Field Trials

GCF Field Trial (FT) testing evaluates the performance and behaviour of a terminal on live commercial networks, under both static and dynamic radio conditions that cannot be fully reproduced in laboratory or simulated environments.

Overview

Field trial testing provides confidence that a device will operate correctly under live network conditions and helps identify interoperability, mobility and performance issues before commercial deployment.

IoTAS are an independent GCF Recognised Test Organisation (RTO) with UKAS ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation and can conduct the following GSMA TS.11, TS.40 and TS.42 GCF FT testing in accordance with the applicable GCF and GSMA requirements:

GCF F5.1
GERAN (2G), UTRAN (3G), EUTRA (4G), 5G-NR3 (NSA) and 5G-NR2 (SA)
GCF F5.2
RCS, RTT, VoLTE, VoWiFi and VoNR
GCF F5.3
Video and Audio Codec
GCF F5.4
NB-IoT, CAT M1 and RedCap

Why is GCF Field Trial Testing important?

Laboratory testing provides an essential controlled environment for verifying device compliance and functionality. However, live network performance depends on the interaction between the device, network configuration, radio environment and services being used.

GCF FT testing validates device behaviour on live commercial networks, including mobility scenarios and network conditions that can be difficult to reproduce in the laboratory. This helps manufacturers identify interoperability and performance issues before commercial deployment and provides greater confidence in the end-user experience.

IoTAS have extensive experience executing FT testing in accordance with GSMA TS.11, TS.40, TS.42 and OMA standards. IoTAS have helped manufacturers successfully achieve GCF certification by performing testing on a wide array of products, including handsets, tablets, modules and products embedding GCF-certified modules.

No matter your device, IoTAS can help identify the correct GCF field trial requirements and execute the testing on live networks using experienced IoTAS engineers.

GCF F5.2 VoLTE

An extensive set of tests need to be run by a terminal supporting VoLTE to obtain GCF approval. These tests are specified within GCF-CC Annex F5.2 and the test procedures are detailed in Section 90 of the GSMA TS.11 Device Field and Lab Test Guidelines.

Why test VoLTE and VoLTE Roaming?

VoLTE performance can vary between network configurations, device implementations and IMS deployments. Field trial testing verifies that the device can establish and maintain voice services reliably over live networks, including mobility and service continuity scenarios such as SRVCC.

VoLTE roaming introduces additional interoperability requirements between the device, home network and visited network, with different network configurations. Field trial testing verifies that voice services can be successfully established and maintained when roaming between networks, including both outbound and inbound scenarios.

Testing helps identify interoperability and network-specific issues that may not be apparent during laboratory testing and provides confidence that users will experience reliable voice services when the device is deployed commercially.

IoTAS have experienced engineers in multiple locations and can offer a full GCF F5.2 VoLTE field trial testing solution, including network-configuration-dependent VoLTE, supported SRVCC scenarios, client-to-client (VoC2C) testing and VoLTE Roaming.

IoTAS can support both GCF and non-GCF VoLTE Roaming testing, helping manufacturers identify potential issues during product development and prepare devices for commercial deployment across supported roaming networks.

GCF F5.2 VoWiFi

As part of the GCF-CC Annex F5.2 VoWiFi testing must be performed across multiple configurations in accordance with the GSMA TS.11 Device Field and Lab Test Guidelines.

Why test VoWiFi?

Field trial testing verifies that voice services can be established and maintained across different Wi-Fi and operator network configurations, while also identifying issues that may only occur under live network conditions. Testing provides confidence in voice quality, service continuity and interoperability before commercial deployment.

The testing process includes the capture and analysis of protocol and IMS logs for test case validation, defect investigation and performance analysis.

IoTAS have experienced engineers ready to meet your testing needs, having tested VoWiFi capabilities across major Operator networks in multiple locations.

With an extensive range of Access Points (APs), IoTAS can provide comparable results against a device of your choosing, helping to demonstrate interoperability between Wi-Fi vendors and competitor reference devices.

GCF F5.2 Real-Time Text (RTT)

RTT field trial scenarios were introduced at GCF FTAG #79 and included in GCF CC version 3.97.0. The test scenarios are also documented in GSMA TS.11 section 95.

Why test RTT?

RTT testing verifies that real-time text communication operates correctly across supported voice services and network configurations. Field trial testing is particularly important for RTT because service behaviour can depend on the interaction between the device, IMS network and access technology.

Testing helps identify interoperability and service-continuity issues and provides confidence that RTT services deliver consistent experience across supported networks.

IoTAS can support RTT field trial testing on live networks in multiple regions and assist with pre-certification testing to identify potential interoperability issues before formal certification.

RTT field trial testing includes scenarios such as:

  • MO/MT Voice Calls with RTT
  • Emergency Calls with RTT (VoLTE, VoNR, VoWiFi)
  • RTT Conference Call Scenarios
  • Mobility (SRVCC to 3G/2G)

GCF F5.4 RedCap

IoTAS were the first field trial test lab to become UKAS 17025 accredited to offer RedCap Field Trial testing in accordance with GSMA TS.40.

We've been actively testing products on this technology since its early deployment and are in a strong position to support your testing requirements.

Why test RedCap?

Field trial testing verifies that RedCap devices operate correctly on live 5G networks, including registration, data transfer, mobility, power-saving features and IMS services where supported.

Testing helps identify network and device interoperability issues early and provides confidence that the product will deliver reliable performance when deployed commercially.

Whether you'd like to test against the GSMA TS.40 requirements or against a bespoke test plan, we're here to support your field-testing needs.

IoTAS can perform GCF field trial testing on live networks in Australia, including scenarios such as:

Registration (Attach/Detach)

Data Transfer

Mobility

RedCap Device SMS

RedCap Voice Call over IMS

C-DRX Operation
